I love heist stories. This is one of the best. I've seen them all on film (Ocean's Films, Italian Job, The Score, Heist, to name a few), and I'm beginning to read many of them. This was the first, and it came highly recommended. I have also seen the film based (in part) on this book. Both the film and the novel are excellent.

The book and the film are very different, especially in the ending which I won't divulge. Suffice to say, one has a tidier ending, and one has a realistic ending. The book's ending is darker and a little sudden (especially if you've already seen the film), but I think the book's ending is stronger. Unfortunately, the movie-going public doesn't like unhappy endings so Ben Affleck had to change a few things in his film.

The characters are terrifically realized. The crew is ruthless and violent, but you never root against them for a minute. The FBI agent tasked with finding and stopping the crew is quite the antagonist in the book, creepy and obsessed with other things as well as justice. The heist scenes are very well written. Fast-paced and hectic, they contrast nicely with the slower character developing scenes and the love story. I can't recommend this novel highly enough, especially to those who love the heist genre.

Wow! Very well written and thought out book! I started reading Chuck Hogan when I bought a copy of "The Strain" and then "The Fall" which Mr. Hogan co-wrote with Guillermo Del Toro. I saw that he had written novels on his own and bought a copy of "Killing Moon" and decided that I wanted to read more of his works. I just finished "Prince of Thieves/The Town" and I was not dissapointed! So now I have bought all of Mr. Hogan's books and I am sure I will enjoy the rest of his novels as I have the others that I have read. Awesome author and I hope he keeps writing more books! I am definitely a fan of his and rank him up with John Sandford, John Lescroat, Robert Crais and Harlan Coben. I have already recommended Mr. Hogan's novels to others and they are just as impressed as I am! Keep up the great work!!!
I read this because I was pretty hyped about the Town being released at the time. A book about bank robberies and it's set in my home of Boston?? Awesome. The ending heist is insane, and the book goes into awesome detail about Charlestown, and Boston. If you love/live in Boston this is a great read, but it's super depressing compared to the movie.
The movie was surprisingly faithful to the novel and without any spoilers there was one big difference that you may love or you may hate ;-)
I took a chance on this book, even though I'm not usually a fan of crime novels or mysteries, and was very pleasantly surprised. This novel (which inspired the recent movie "The Town") is not a crime drama or a mystery after all. It is mainly a character study of Doug, an ex con, bank robber, recovering alcoholic who has grown beyond his friends, his profession, and the small-town, hard-core, bad neighborhood in which he grew up. Insightful, thought-provoking, and impossible to put down.
Turned out that the movie was similar to the book. Both are excellent!
What a writer! Read it after I saw it's the source material for the screenplay for The Town. Naturally the book was different and deeper and didn't have the fairy tale ending. It was grittier and truer. The Irish do have a way with words. I have to buy another copy to reread because I lent it and lost it and it's a keeper.
One of the few times I felt the movie version of a book was much superior. Not exactly a page turner. Flipped through the endless pages of tedious narrative between Claire and Doug. Action sequences not impressive. Good basis for a film, not so great stand-alone. YMMV, but be advised.
