Our Hero: Giles Goddard, Lord Norcourt, was born with his navel cord wrapped around his neck which apparently caused him to be a slow learner. His father was very displeased with his firstborn son and decided to send Giles away to an orphanage in Ireland to be raised by nuns when he was 8 years of age. When Giles' father dies a few years later, his mother immediately remarries and a second son is born, Simon Appleton. Once Giles grows up, he inherits the title and is reunited with his mother and meets his brother, Simon, for the first time. Giles has a very wounded heart because his parents abandoned him at a young age and never visited him again. He and Simon have very little regard for one another because they have never had the opportunity to become acquainted. Giles doesn't have very many words for anyone, much less his mother who he feels never wanted him or she would have visited him in far off Ireland and brought him home.

Our Heroine: Lucy Whitaker, a servant girl, has a past which included being ruined by a young lord who got her pregnant - her sweet, inventive son, Seth, is the result. Seth is forever attempting to find his mama a husband so he can have a father. Once he meets Simon, who was beaten and left wounded near the cottage where he lives with his mother, Seth believes he might have finally succeeded in finding himself a father.

The Story: When Seth tells Lucy he has found a wounded gentleman near their home, they drag Simon to their home so they can nurse him back to health. When Simon is asked who Lucy can send for, he tells her to send for Giles who is nearby at a house party. Giles is more than eager to get away from the house party because social situations are very awkward for him. Although he can't imagine why Simon would send for him since they barely speak, he takes advantage of the situation and immediately heads to Lucy's home.

Once Giles and Lucy meet, there is an immediate spark between the two of them. However, he is very reticent and Lucy, for her part doesn't trust young lords at all. Little does she know that much of Giles' reticence is due to his lack of a normal social life having only one true friend in his life and never, absolutely never, having been with a woman - not even to share a kiss. To complicate matters, Simon has a crush on Lucy so Giles determines to do nothing that would give the appearance of encroaching on his brother's preserves.

When Lucy loses her job in the village and cannot find another one due to her tarnished reputation, both brothers insist she come with them to London and work with their mother in her lending library. As times goes by, all the relationships get sorted out. Giles begins to understand a lot of things he believed about his life might not have been true and some truths are indeed a little astonishing. Lucy begins to realize that perhaps not all young lords are selfish and lacking in gentlemanly qualities. Both Giles and Simon are quality and loving and kind. Which one will Lucy choose? I rooted for Giles because he was such of an underdog - yet, handsome and super sweet. He was/is not your typical regency rake hero - rather, he was much better. He eventually learned he didn't have to be fast to catch his lady.

Desires of a Baron Gentlemen of Honor Book 2 edition by Rose Gordon Romance eBooks Reviews

I was anxiously awaiting Giles and Lucy's book, the second of the Gentlemen of Honor Series by Ms. Gordon, and it did not disappoint. Giles, Lord Norcout, born with the life cord wrapped around his neck, was the perfect hero, being a slow thinker, but tenderhearted. Lucy, our heroine, had made a collosal mistake in her youth, which left her with an illegitimate son, Seth. Seth does his darndest to find a father for himself and a husband for his mother, so when he finds an injured Simon in the woods, he insists that his mother bring him home and nurse him back to health.

Simon, having no one else to inform of his injuries, sends for his newly-discovered brother, Giles. Giles finds himself drawn to Lucy from their first meeting, but thinks (erroneously, of course) that because he is uncomfortable in social situations, and not what he considers good husband material, she would be better suited for his brother, Simon, so decides to stand aside while Simon courts Lucy. This leaves Seth free time to spend with Giles, and let me tell you that some of those scenes were the funniest I have read in quite awhile. Lucy was also attracted to Giles from the start, but because she considers herself "damaged goods" and also because of his title, is reluctant to have anything to do with him, since it was a titled "gentleman" who disgraced her years ago. Thrown into all this, we have Giles's issues with his estranged brother and mother, and trying to come to grips with why he was sent away at the age of eight to an orphanage to be raised by nuns.

Watching Giles and Lucy, along with Seth, find their way to each other was heart-warming, as well as LOL hilarious at times. Ms. Gordon has a way of not only giving us truly warm and wonderful characters, but also secondary characters who just scream out for their own HEA. Her heroes are sexy, if somewhat naive, and her heroines are strong-minded and know exactly what they want, until they meet the man who changes their life forever, that is.

If you haven't read any of her books, I strongly recommend you grab one and find out for yourself why Rose Gordon has totally captured me as one of her biggest fans.
Old Lord Northcote wants an heir. When his son, Giles was born with a cord wrapped around his neck, he was appalled. The boy was slow to walk, slow to talk, just slow in every way. As soon as he finds out that his young wife is pregnant again, he takes steps to insure that Giles will not inherit. He sends the boy off to a Catholic orphanage so everyone will assume that the new child is the heir. The old man dies before the expected child is born, his wife IMMEDIATELY remarries, but still Giles remains at the orphanage. Finally, at the age of 28, he shocks society by arriving in London and claiming his title. He is tall and handsome but shy and definitely...odd. Fallen woman Lucy Whitaker loathes the nobility. As a teen she is taken advantage of by a Viscount's heir and now has an 11 year old son. She supports herself working at a bakery in a small village. Her son finds an unconscious man in the woods and they bring him to her cottage to attend to his wounds. When his brother, Giles, arrives to rescue him she finds herself attracted to this awkward but oddly endearing man.

I loved this story. Rather than the usual 'rake redeemed by love' story, we have a hero who, though a little slow in his thinking, is determined to do the right thing even when he is not sure exactly what that is. He is blunt but honest, loyal to a fault, and protective of those he believes to be in need of help. I adored him. I was also pleased to find a heroine who was determined to support herself and her son by any honest means that she could even though she was a 'fallen woman.' The secondary characters are all interesting and I am anxious to read the story of Simon, Giles' brother.
