This is the story of two high school seniors, Katherine and Michael and how they fall in love. It is also the story of how their relationship develops until they decide to have sex. The novel follows their entire relationship, and Blume presents a realistic, though ultimately unhappy, look at young love. Katherine and Michael are ultimately forced to separate for the summer (by their parents against both of their wishes) but vow that they will stay together forever. Many of the parents and censors that I read about felt that students reading this book would promote sexual activity. It was pointed out in the New York Times article that just because a kid feels old enough to read about the sexual relationship presented in Forever, does not mean that that child feels old enough to go out and engage in sex themselves. This goes back to the idea that we as adults can predict and understand exactly how a book will affect a specific child. Children will take what they want from books.
This book is a slippery slope because it does contain graphic sexual content. Though I would point out that the sex between Michael and Katherine is ridiculously responsible: Michael doesn’t pressure Katherine, he waits until she is ready, they use condoms, Katherine takes herself to Family Planning and gets on birth control. Though young, they are enter into a mature relationship. Those points alone are enough for me, were I parent, to allow my child to read this book. However, I don’t believe that reading books will convince children to do things that they weren’t already considering. Just as I don’t believe that reading Harry Potter will convince children that magic is real and that there is no God, I don’t believe that reading about sex makes people have sex.
However, I can understand the reaction to this book, especially in light of when it was originally published. Not only were there different standards for the content of books at the time, but there weren’t as many books being published that pushed the limit. Were this book to be published today I don’t believe it would receive as much negative notice.

The first time I heard about this book was in my 6th Grade class when we were discussing banned and challenged books. My teacher gave the class a few examples of banned books and one of them was "Forever...". The class asked about this book in particular (probably because of the picture on the front cover, haha) and she told my class the reason it was banned from our library was becasue it talks explicitly about sex. I (just like any other child) was DYING to read the book. My parents wouldn't have cared if I read it, but the problem was I COULDN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE! None of the libraries had it and I had no idea where I could get the book. Years have passed and I was searching for a good book on , and I came across this book. The title sounded so familiar and it took me a few minutes to realize that it was the same book I wanted to read in 6th grade! So I decided to order it and finally read it. I am now older and more mature, so when I read the book...I thought it was a little juvenille for me..but too inappropriate for me when I was in 6th grade. I just wish I read it when I was a bit younger. It talks about love, the first time having sex, how to prevent pregnancy and how relationships (even one's that seem like a fairytale) can end. I think this book would be appropriate for ages 14-17. Some people say this book is "preverted", but I actually think it is a good book for young adults that want to know a bit more about sex and birth control. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good story about romance and intimacy.
This book was in my syllabus. It is not for the faint hearted as it dives into sexual context, but I enjoyed it. If I have a daughter, she's receiving this book post puberty. The protagonist is rather empowering and in control of her sexuality. Go Judy Blume! Given the era in which this was written, quite the futuristic ideology.
A book I first read in late middle school, it shows the first time romance between a girl and her boyfriend. It takes you through their journey as a couple. While some may find this not exciting or worth reading, I feel that for those who can handle the sensitive material, it is a great book to read before getting into a relationship. If the age level wasn't so subjective, I'd have given this more stars as it is well-written and a wonderful book.
Forever written by Judy Blume was read by me more than twenty years ago. Hard to believe now. I remember thinking that it was one of the most romantic teen love stories I had ever read and that was ever written. It's not a book written to teach young teens how to have sex, but more or less the consequences of having sex at an age where you feel invincable. Like nothing can happen to me. It deals with heartbreak and love loss. Very real things to a teenager that thinks she's found it all at a young age.
A heart-felt and true story that is so elloquently written. One of the first books ever to discuss this "teen sex" issue, which at the time, made it almost taboo. This was always one of my favorite books and still is today
It was so refreshing to know that someone else understands what teens go through and could write about it so candidly. I remember this book went through all of my friends. We loved Judy Blume as young teens and still do today. It was read over and over. It's a memory I simply don't want to lose.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
A valuable read especially with kids or grand kids entering that age. The importance of first love and how the parents handled it. An insight that these initial connections do not hold up to separation. By extension, protection from the difficulty naive lovers may face with real life experiences. Some justification for parental action taken to enable dependents more decision making maturity.
I was 13 years old when I first read this book. I'm 43 now and I've never forgotten about Forever. I didn't remember every detail I just remembered that I loved it then and I still love it now. I'm going to purchase the paperback for my 16 year old son. Thank you!
