Read Me Like a Book is a feel good coming of age story. Seventeen year old Ash is thrown into a world so many teenagers are familiar with. Her parents are fighting, school hasn’t been easy, her best friend is pissed at her and to top it off she’s faced with the decision of whether or not to lose her virginity. Ash should be having the time of her life with her boyfriend and instead she’s wrapped up in thoughts of pleasing her new English teacher.

In this day and age it seems that “coming out” stories are becoming a hot topic for authors. Ten years ago we struggled to find anything written for the gay community and now we can’t keep up with them. As much as I love reading gay fiction (not smut) I tend to shy away from coming out stories. They all follow a similar suit; an angsty teen in a relationship with the wrong gender, falling for someone they can’t have.

Ash is a difficult character for me to relate to. First of all, the author gave no physical description of her. Then her thoughts jumped all over the place. The progression of Ash’s feelings toward women happened really suddenly. I felt like there should have been more of Ash questioning her sexuality before the chapter where she’s full on fantasizing about her teacher. It would have made the story a bit more believable for me.It may be for the fact that Ash is more than a decade younger than me and I found many of her problems trivial or hated the way she handled them. If I remind myself of how I acted at seventeen, I loosen up my criticism just a bit.

What I appreciated most about this book was the smile it left me with at the end. Ash’s progression was inspiring. When she finally started to take control of her life and stand up for herself, it created a huge turning point in the book.

If you are looking for a fun, easy to read, coming out story then I urge you to give this a shot.

Love is confusing at any age, but when it's new --- when you fall in love for the first time --- and with someone you never would have expected, it takes on a whole new level of confusing.

READ ME LIKE A BOOK is a captivating, honest and almost surprisingly accurate peek into the mind of a teenage girl on her personal journey to figure out who she really is --- all while the universe seems to be throwing curveball after life-changing event, after dramatic altercation her way. Ash can't explain it, even to herself, but she finds solace in Miss Murray's english classroom. Or, is it in the way her eyes seem to sparkle and the room appears to light up when she smiles?

Tackling a topic that, to some, may be controversial, and to others may be all too familiar, this book should should be eye-opening to all. Liz Kessler's ability to so accurately recall the uncertainties of young adulthood is a recognizable talent. I was also impressed with her precise depiction being young in the present culture of Snapchat stories and text message-breakups. I have always found that writers who make a conscious effort to create a realistic world that truly relates to its audience's day-to-day life far more appealing.

Also noteworthy is how Kessler weaves anecdotal memories into Ash's story. Her narration and the creative analogies she uses to describe Ash's feelings of uncertainty and frustration are often interrupted by short side stories and memories of more comfortable, less confusing times in her life. These glimpses into Ash's old life and juxtapositions of the simplicity of her past are integral to the portrayal of a time and of feelings that, for most, seem impossible to put into words. While I did feel that the conclusion to the story was a bit abrupt and a little too clean, I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to navigate their life, and anyone who wants to reflect on how far they have come since that trying stage of life.

As an adult, reading this book brought me back to the time in my life when I never seemed to be able to articulate my thoughts without second (third, fourth, fifth) guessing every decision I made. To younger readers, READ ME LIKE A BOOK is a reminder that everyone goes through a period of self discovery, everyone struggles with big life events, decisions, and overwhelming emotions and that is okay --- reading yourself like a book takes time, reflection, and a whole lot of patience. Kessler wrote a story that will surely guide many readers through writing and reading their own book.

Ashleigh doesn't know what she wants to do after school. There isn't anything she's really good at, except hanging out with her best friend. At home things are also not going so well. Her parents aren't getting along and there are plenty of fights and not much attention for Ashleigh. She has a boyfriend, but something feels off. She isn't as happy with him as she should be. The only person who makes her feel better is her English teacher, Miss Murray, who helps her to get better grades. Miss Murray encourages her and Ashleigh finally becomes more confident about her schoolwork. Only when she's spending more time with her teacher other insecurities come to the surface. Ashleigh likes her teacher, she likes her a lot...

Read Me Like A Book is an interesting coming of age story. Ashleigh's having many problems and nothing is easy for her. Her last school year isn't about having fun and feeling free. She's having trouble to keep herself together and she has no idea how to deal with all of her issues. Love can be confusing, but it can also be something beautiful. Ashleigh is discovering a lot about herself in a short period of time. She has her flaws, but she's also sweet and smart. I kept hoping she would find happiness with someone. It was tough to watch her struggle. Miss Murray is kind and approachable and they have a strong connection, but she can never fully be herself around Ashleigh. I was curious to see how their relationship would develop.

Red Me Like A Book is a fast-paced read. It has an easy flow and likable main characters. I think Liz Kessler has written a good story. It's all about relationships in many different ways. Ashleigh isn't very good at expressing herself and I kept hoping she would feel more comfortable in her own skin, that she would choose to do what made her happy. It was great to finally see her show people her real personality and to watch her grow up. The ending is surprising and I really liked it. Read Me Like A Book is a wonderful story.
